BURROW

You are a badger. Every night you leave your den to forage the island for grubs, mushrooms, berries and sweet honeycomb, and you have to be home before dawn.

But the wolves are out too. They hunt by sight, and when one spots you, it howls for the pack. Your only trick is the one badgers do best: dig. Burrow underground to vanish, tunnel under rocks the wolves have to run around, and burst up right beneath a wolf to ambush it.

• Collect the night’s food, then walk into your den before the sun comes up.
• Dig to escape. Digging and tunnelling cost stamina, which only refills above ground.
• Hide in thickets. Wolves can’t see you there unless they’re right beside you.
• Use the island. Grumpy boars charge any wolf that’s hunting nearby, so lead the pack past one. Startle a stag and its alarm bark pulls searching wolves away from you.
• Honeycomb heals a heart. Buried grubs can only be dug up from below.
• Every night the island grows, the wolves multiply and get faster, and you need more food.

• Classic: survive as many nights as you can.
• Endless Night (unlocks at night 3): one huge island and no dawn. Carry food home to bank it, but every piece slows you down, and whatever you’re carrying is lost if the wolves catch you. The pack grows every minute, and every few minutes a blood moon makes the wolves faster and sharper-eyed.
• Pack Leader (unlocks at night 5): the tables turn, and you’re the alpha wolf. Lead your pack, bite and howl to hunt badgers, stags and boars, and feed the pack before dawn. The wild badgers play by the same rules you did, and they’re clever.
